Tough Lesson

Managing the impact of world-class attractions on local mobility and access

Manitou Springs is a town that everyone wants a piece of. Tourists flock there for Pikes Peak and Cave of the Winds, businesses depend on that traffic, and residents just want to be able to get around their own town. Finding a mobility strategy that works for all three is genuinely hard. I served as second in command on this project, leading the plan making process and helping navigate the competing interests that make Manitou such a complex planning environment. The goal was never to choose winners and losers between tourists, residents, and businesses. It was to find a vision for mobility that honored what makes Manitou worth visiting in the first place.
